Grant Serafy

Camp Director

Head Women's Soccer Coach

Grant Serafy is in his 6th year as Head Women's Soccer Coach at Mercer University. After some hard work and building upon an almost non-existent foundation, he was able to turn a perennial loser into one of the most successful programs in the Atlantic Sun. Serafy's stint has been marked by steady improvement. His first year at Mercer, after being hired in March of 2004 and not having a chance to recruit, Mercer did not make the conference tournament. His second year, 2005, the Bears had a chance to qualify all the way to the last game of the season. Serafy's third year, 2006, Mercer finished 5-3-1 in conference and qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998 and finished above .500 in conference play for the first time since 1998.

In 2007, the Bears finished 11-7-2 overall, 9-2-0 in conference, and advanced to the A-Sun championship game. It was the most successful season in Mercer women's soccer history. The 11 wins tied the 1991 team for the most wins ever. The 9 conference wins were the most ever and Mercer's success in advancing to the championship game was the furthest Mercer had ever been in conference play. For his efforts, Serafy was honored as the 2007 A-Sun Coach of the Year.

The 2008 campaign topped 2007's successful season.  The Bears won the school’s first A-Sun regular season championship and captured the top seed for the tournament and advanced to the championship game only to lose in penalty kicks (after outshooting the opposition 28-9!). Mercer ended 11-5-4 and finished 7-2-1 in conference play.  Mercer's team defense was consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country for goals against average and the Bears also ended the season regionally ranked by Soccer Buzz for the first time.  The program was featured on espn.com at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3668553!  Additionally, Coach Serafy was named the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year marking the first time a coach had ever received the honor in consecutive years.  The Bears had continued success in 2009 as they reached their 4th consecutive conference tournament and earned their 4th consecutive winning conference record.

The women's soccer program has been successful off the field as well during Serafy's tenure. His first year, Mercer had 9 out of 17 players selected Conference All-Academic. Serafy's second year, the Bears had 10 out of 22 players honored. In 2006, Serafy's third year, Mercer had an impressive 17 out of 25 Conference All-Academic performers. In 2007, 23 of 27 players were so honored. The team has been awarded the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award, based on overall team grade point average, every year during Serafy's tenure.

Prior to his stint at Mercer, Serafy was Head Boys and Girls Soccer Coach at Stratford Academy in Macon where he won 7 boys' state titles and 9 consecutive girls' titles compiling an overall record with the boys of 215-64-13 and 153-14-4 with the girls. The win percentage with the boys and girls is among the best ever in the country and is so recognized by the NSCAA Winningest All-Time Coaches lists. His win percentage of .906 with the girls is the 8th best all-time.

Serafy holds a USSF "A" License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma, the two highest coaching credentials in the country. After growing up in Atlanta, winning two state championships for The Westminster Schools, he went on to play NCAA Division I soccer at Hartwick College in New York. Serafy holds a Masters degree in Sports Management from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
